With the rise of online marketing and advertising, more and more companies are forgoing traditional advertising mediums like print and television in favor of promoting business on the Internet. This is because the number of internet users increases with each passing day, and this provides the perfect opportunity for advertisers and business owners alike to find a specific target market to sell a product or service to.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a company without a website these days, as having a strong web presence is crucial to finding prospective customers, which could eventually lead to more sales. But more often than not, these websites don’t always attract as much visitors as they should, and this leads businesses to find new ways to increase website traffic.

There are two kinds of online marketing used to increase the amount of visitors to a website, and they both rely on search engines. However, when people use online search engines and see the results page, they usually only skim over the first couple of pages and don’t even bother going beyond the second page. This means that only the highest ranking results have the possibility of attracting visitors to their site.

The first kind of local search marketing, search engine optimization, or SEO, increases the rank of a website so it has better visibility in search engines. It involves optimizing websites through incorporating backlinks and finding the right keywords so search engines can find it easier. The one drawback with SEO that it is very time-consuming, especially if you opt to do it by yourself, but fortunately, there are a number of SEO companies that specialize in website optimization and offer services for a relatively affordable price.

The second kind of local search marketing is pay per click, or PPC. PPC advertising involves putting up text ads next to search results for a particular keyword. As the term pay per click suggests, you pay each time a visitor clicks on these text ads because they get redirected to your website. Although it may seem cost-effective at the outset, expenses can skyrocket especially if you get more clicks than you bargained for.

There are pros and cons to both types of local search marketing. SEO can sometimes have better results, but it’s slower and takes more time to see desired results. PPC takes only a short amount of time, although it involves a lot of strategic planning in order to avoid costly mistakes. Either way, the type of online marketing you choose depends entirely on your time, funds, or preference.
